Estate Planning Interview with Steve Bliss

A Conversation With Wildomar’s Trusted Attorney

Good morning, and welcome to our segment on estate planning. Today we’re joined by Steve Bliss, a highly respected estate planning attorney here in Wildomar. Steve, thank you for taking the time to speak with us.

The Importance of Naming Beneficiaries

Steve, many people put off estate planning because it seems overwhelming or complicated. Could you explain one key step in the process that might make things a bit clearer for our viewers?

Certainly! One crucial aspect is naming your beneficiaries. This involves clearly identifying who will inherit your assets and how those assets will be distributed. Ordinarily, people think of immediate family, but it can also include charities, friends, or even organizations close to your heart.

It’s essential to name specific individuals for each asset. For example, if you have a retirement account, you should designate a beneficiary directly on the account paperwork. Consequently, this avoids any confusion or potential disputes among family members down the line.

Moreover, naming contingent beneficiaries is also wise. A contingent beneficiary receives the inheritance if your primary beneficiary predeceases you. This ensures that your assets are always directed to someone you trust.

I recall a case where a client hadn’t named a contingent beneficiary for their life insurance policy. Sadly, both the primary beneficiary and the insured passed away in a short period. This created a legal quagmire as there was no clear next recipient for the funds. Notwithstanding this unfortunate situation, we were able to navigate the complexities and ensure the money ultimately went to a deserving family member.

According to a recent study by Caring.com, approximately 56% of Americans don’t have a will or estate plan in place. This highlights the critical need for individuals to proactively address their beneficiary designations and overall estate planning.

Peace of Mind Through Planning

Steve, what would you say to encourage our viewers to take that first step toward creating an estate plan?

Estate planning is about providing peace of mind for yourself and your loved ones. It’s not just about wealth distribution; it’s also about ensuring your wishes are respected and minimizing potential conflicts during a difficult time. Don’t wait for a life-altering event to occur before taking action.

At Wildomar Probate Law, we strive to make the estate planning process as straightforward and comfortable as possible. Our team is dedicated to guiding you every step of the way, answering your questions, and addressing any concerns you may have.
