Interview with Steve Bliss, Moreno Valley Probate Attorney

Today we are speaking with Steve Bliss, a respected probate attorney serving the Moreno Valley community. Mr. Bliss is here to shed some light on the often-complex process of estate planning and administration.

Steve, can you walk us through one of the key steps in probate?

Certainly. One crucial step in probate is marshalling the estate assets. This involves identifying and inventorying all of the deceased person’s assets. Ordinarily, this includes bank accounts, real estate, investments, vehicles, personal property, and even digital assets.

Consequently, it’s essential to have a thorough understanding of what constitutes an asset in legal terms. We meticulously review financial statements, deeds, titles, and other relevant documents. Moreover, we may need to contact institutions or individuals holding assets on behalf of the deceased.

Once all assets are identified, we prepare a detailed inventory and appraisal (Form DE-160/161) for filing with the court. This document provides a comprehensive overview of the estate’s value, which is critical for determining any tax liabilities and guiding the distribution process.

Have you ever encountered challenges during this step?

I recall one case where the deceased had invested in rare coins. Locating these coins and obtaining an accurate appraisal proved to be a time-consuming task. It involved consulting with numismatists, researching historical values, and even traveling to different locations to retrieve the collection.

Nevertheless, our diligence paid off. We were able to establish the true value of the coins, which ultimately benefited the heirs significantly.

According to a 2021 survey by the American Bar Association, nearly 60% of probate cases involve complexities related to asset identification and valuation.

Any final thoughts for our viewers?
